Gropp Concert Model Classical Guitar in Maple and Spruce

£2,249.00 incl. VAT

The guitar we have here is number #972 and was made and signed by Armin Gropp. There are very few of these wonderful instruments available anywhere in the world today.

The Concert Model has a full 65cms scale but a body size which is just slightly smaller than the modern classical standard.

“Absolutely wonderful … great sound and amazing looks” Nick Coates

“Beautiful to play. Set-up spot on.” Keith K (x-BBC sound engineer)

When you pick it up the first thing you notice is just how light this instrument is – the centre of gravity is in the heel of the neck rather than somewhere in the upper body.

But the next thing you notice is that this is not a quiet instrument: somehow the volume has not been reduced in proportion to the lightness of the materials used.

And then, in case you hadn’t noticed it first, you gasp at just how beautiful this guitar is. The flamed maple has a wonderful rich hue, the bindings/purflings are bold against the maple surround, while the oval soundhole with its simple decorative ring instead of the normally elaborate rosette seems absolutely natural and not an understatement at all.

Both the back and the soundboard and arched; in the style of a violin although in this case quite subtly.

When playing two things really struck me –

  • How clear was the separation of voices in any kind of polyphonic piece
  • How responsive was the instrument to changes in dynamics in one’s playing

The soundboard is in long-matured solid spruce. The instrument has a classic french polish finish. The fingerboard has a very slight curve to facilitate barre chords and the neck has discrete position markers at frets 5, 7 and 9. And yes, in true Gropp attention to detail, the screw heads on the machine heads all line up in a perfect vertical!!
